The operation ‘Market Garden’ (‘Market’ was the airborne part and 'Garden' the ground part) had started on 17 September 1944. The Raf 38 Group who had begun to drop troops and gliders, on 17 September, also had to re-supply these ground forces from 18 to 23 September 1944. During these re-supply missions the crews were reinforced with two more men, all from Royal Army Service Corps.
These RASC men were Air Despatchers who were responsible for the Army supplies the aircraft were carrying. 216 Air Despatchers were shot down during ‘Market Garden’ and 79 never returned.
35 of these fallen men were lost while flying with the 38 Group airmen.
It wasn’t logical that these men who flew and died with 38 Group airmen weren’t honoured.
So that’s why there’ll now be this Roll of Honour just next to the 38 Group Roll of Honour to reunite the fallen crews.
They deserve it.

Their names liveth for evermore
